Today, let’s dive into the heart of the Hippo Roller technology and the incredible transformations it’s sparking worldwide.

Behind the Innovation:
At the core of Hippo Roller’s brilliance lies a deceptively simple yet profoundly impactful design. A durable drum that can be rolled on the ground using a handle to transport up to 90 litres of water providing a lifeline for communities facing water scarcity, changing the game for those who have to trek long distances with heavy bucket loads of water on their heads.

First designed in 1991 by two South Africans, Pettie Petzer and Johan Jonker who received their first design award in 1992 from the SABS (South African Bureau of Standards) Design Institute and despite a number of small improvements over the years, the Hippo Roller’s original design is primarily unchanged.

Managed by its Founder, Grant Gibbs, Hippo Roller have built a sustainable business supplying Hippo Rollers and related products to Corporate businesses for social upliftment and brand-building promotions, NGOs for improving access to water, saving time for other important activities and improved education and employment opportunities, and donors for helping rural and impoverished communities around the world and Governments.

The Ripple Effect:
What makes this technology truly revolutionary is its ripple effect it creates within communities around the globe. The daily trek to collect water, often a physically demanding task, falls disproportionately on the shoulders of women and children. The Hippo Roller relieves this burdensome challenge, allowing them to transport up to 90 litres of water by rolling the burden on the ground.

Lightened from this task this opens the way to more opportunities for education for children, particularly young girls, who are often responsible for water collection, limiting their time for schooling, breaking the cycle of poverty and contributing meaningfully to their communities.

Empowerment of women within the community also becomes possible. Beyond the physical strain, women obtain the time and energy to engage in income-generating activities, community projects, or pursue personal interests.

The consistent and efficient access to water strengthens the foundation of these communities. Agriculture thrives, health improves, and the overall well-being of the community experiences an uplift.

The ripple effect is not confined to local communities either, it extends globally. As awareness spreads and more individuals, organizations, and governments make use of the Hippo Roller technology to help, the impact multiplies. A global movement driven by a simple yet transformative technology.

Global Impact:
70,000 Hippo Rollers, 700,000 direct beneficiaries, 56 countries, 2 billion litres of water a year but it’s not just about numbers; it’s about lives changed.

The Hippo Roller technology is reaching corners of the world where clean water was once a distant dream. The impact is tangible, and it’s all thanks to the simplicity and brilliance of this game-changing invention.

More water means a better quality of life, children are enabled to get to school and gain better employment opportunities. Families can irrigate crops, generate income and rise above subsistence levels, restoring dignity through improved health, hygiene and poverty alleviation.

Currently, all Hippo Rollers are manufactured in South Africa and exported to many countries. Shipping in bulk and local manufacture will reduce the ‘landed’ cost due to the volumetric rates charged.
