In the heart of Macassar, a once-overgrown piece of land has transformed into a thriving community garden. Thanks to the Seeds of Hope, hard work, and daily nurture, with a bit of help from Hippo Rollers, this garden is providing vegetables to feed the community and fostering a sense of pride among a group of determined young minds.
Jane, concerned about the nutrition of the local children where she lives, gathered a team armed with spades and determination. The result? Rows and rows of vegetables and a very proud team of children.
The children involved in Jane’s Garden are not just cultivators; they are eco-warriors as part of the ParkBuddies project with the mission to tidy up the environment in Macassar, turning a neglected space into a haven for both people and nature.
What started with only 25 packets of seeds has blossomed into a lush and nutritious vegetable garden. Back in June this year, Jane bought four packets of seeds but the project received a generous boost when 🌻STODELS nursery gifted an additional nineteen packets, propelling the dream of a thriving garden forward.
A group of a dozen young boys help Jane to prepare and maintain the garden. Collecting water on their way to school, they carry the water up from the small canal which is backbreaking work and as we head into summer is a major necessity for the lovely delicious growing plants!
Recognizing how tough carrying water from a small canal to sustain the garden, we reached out to Sulabh International Social Service Organisation and Terry Steenhuisen who didn’t hesitate to support and empower this team of young gardeners in the form of two fabulous Hippo Rollers, making the essential task of watering the plants more efficient and less strenuous.
Their hard work and all the support they have received has yielded a bountiful harvest. Spinach is abundant, and the children have generously shared their produce with local residents, proving that when hearts, hands, and innovative solutions come together, a sustainable and thriving future is within reach.
Jane’s Garden is a testament to the power of community collaboration. Together, they are not only growing vegetables but also sowing the seeds of hope, resilience, and a greener, more sustainable future.
