Sometimes, the most profound reminders of our impact come when we least expect them. This is exactly what happened when Ally Minnaar, Operations Director at Khula Community Centre, which is near Port Shepstone, inland, near Orobi Gorge Nature Reserve.

Ally reached out to us last week, excited by a surprising sight.

“I haven’t seen these rollers out for a long time. And I was so surprised this morning when I saw this guy with the Hippo Roller. It made me think of you and my American friend who supported us in getting them years ago. I hope this puts a smile on your face.” – Ally Minnaar

This Hippo Roller that Ally saw was one originally donated by Terri Hoover, a salon owner in Dallas, Texas felt compelled to support Khula after witnessing the challenges faced by women and children who often walk long distances to fetch water. Terri was able to raise enough funds to purchase thirty-three Hippo Rollers for the community.

“I was recently in Khula for the presentation of 33 Water ‘Hippos’. It was so exciting and humbling. On my first trip to South Africa there was a young man traveling with us named Jacob Way. He had seen the ladies carrying water on their heads, came back to the US and raised enough $ for a well that was in a safer, closer location. I was touched by that, so when I saw this product, I just knew it was the next step.” – Terry Hoover

For many organizations, seeing their product in action after so many years is a rare gift.

Thank you, Ally Minnaar, for sharing this moment with us. We are inspired by these stories from communities like Khula, where simple yet powerful innovations continue to transform lives.

Join us in making a difference. Whether through donations, corporate sponsorships, or spreading the word, your support helps ensure that more communities like Khula can benefit from this life-changing tool, one Hippo Roller at a time.
